A febre aftosa no Brasil, 1960-2002 Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lyra,T.M.P.; Silva,J.A..

A field survey of crop management practices and distribution of ALS resistant Euphorbia heterophylla in two states in southern Brazil Planta Daninha
Vidal,R.A.; Winkler,L.M.; Hernandes,G.C.; Fleck,N.G.; Merotto Jr.,A.; Trezzi,M.M..
Herbicide resistance was reported in Brazil almost ten years ago. One of the main weeds with herbicide resistance is wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla). This work evaluates the distribution of ALS-resistant E. heterophylla in two states in southern Brazil and determines the major contributing management causes for weed resistance selection in the area. E. heterophylla seeds from 148 sites located in Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul were sampled during 2001 and 2002. Farmers provided specific site data for weed control, tillage system, crop rotation and harvesting operations during previous years. ALS resistant E. heterophylla biotypes were found widely distributed in the survey area. Data analysis suggests seed dissemination is unlikely to explain the...

A framework for analysing corporate social performance; Beyond the Wood model AgEcon
Pierick, E. Ten; Beekman, Volkert; van der Weele, C.N.; Meeusen, Marieke J.G.; de Graaff, R.P.M..
Many business organisations put a lot of effort in raising their performance levels in the three dimensions of sustainability - i.e., people, planet, and profit. It is therefore important to measure and weight the effects of their efforts. In this report a framework is presented that is helpful in analysing the social, environmental, and economic activities of a business firm or chain. This framework is based on Wood's (1991) model of corporate social performance. However, it is enriched by incorporating contributions by other significant scientific studies in the fields of corporate social performance and business ethics. Furthermore, based on a review of the scientific literature, suggestions for operationalising the framework are offered.

A Framework to Analyze the Robustness of Social-ecological Systems from an Institutional Perspective Ecology and Society
Anderies, John M; Arizona State University; m.anderies@asu.edu; Janssen, Marco A; Indiana University; maajanss@indiana.edu; Ostrom, Elinor; Indiana University; ostrom@indiana.edu.
What makes social-ecological systems (SESs) robust? In this paper, we look at the institutional configurations that affect the interactions among resources, resource users, public infrastructure providers, and public infrastructures. We propose a framework that helps identify potential vulnerabilities of SESs to disturbances. All the links between components of this framework can fail and thereby reduce the robustness of the system. We posit that the link between resource users and public infrastructure providers is a key variable affecting the robustness of SESs that has frequently been ignored in the past. We illustrate the problems caused by a disruption in this link. We then briefly describe the design principles originally developed for robust...

A functional study of caustic strictures of the esophagus in children BJMBR
Da-Costa-Pinto,E.A.L.; Dorsa,T.K.; Altimani,A.; Andreollo,N.A.; Cardoso,S.R.; Morais,D.J.; Bustorff-Silva,J.M..
The objective of the present study was to assess esophageal motor function in 21 children (7.5 ± 2.9 years) with caustic strictures. Esophageal manometry was performed using a water-infusion system interfaced with a polygraph and displayed on a computer screen. The data were compared with those obtained from 9 healthy children. Radionuclide transit was determined by studying deglutition of a single bolus of 99mTc pertechnetate in 10 ml of water. Non-peristaltic low-amplitude and long-duration waves were the most common findings detected in patients with strictures longer than 20% of esophageal length (N = 11). Compared with the control group, these patients presented lower mean amplitude and longer mean duration of waves (24.4 ± 11.2 vs 97.9 ± 23.7 mmHg, P...

A GENERAL APPROACH TO VALUING COMMODITY-LINKED BONDS AgEcon
Jin, Yufei; Turvey, Calum G..
The purpose of this paper is to develop a general approach to valuing commodity-linked bonds (CLBs) based on the Heath-Jarrow-Morton (HJM) framework. The model deals with four dimensions of uncertainty: prices of the underlying commodity, the value of firm that issues bonds, interest rates, and convenience yields. A mathematical formula for the price of a commodity-linked bond is derived. The previous results in Black and Scholes (1973), Merton (1973), Schwartz (1982), and Atta-Mensah (1992) can be obtained by specifying appropriate restrictions in the general model. Using similar assumptions, as found in Miura and Yamauchi (1998) and Carr (1987), more reasonable results can be obtained through the application of the present model.

A General Equilibrium Analysis of the Impact of Inward FDI on Ghana: The Role of Complementary Policies AgEcon
Arbenser, Lawrence.
The need for external capital (FDI) inflow to finance the current account deficit of developing countries cannot be over-emphasized. Foreign direct investment takes predominance over other types of capital inflow into developing countries. How would an increase in FDI and a reduction in import tariff levels in isolation affect household welfare and other macroeconomic indicators? How would the concurrent application of the two enhance the expected impact? This paper explores the above questions by using a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model for Ghana, implemented in the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) to carry out specific counterfactual simulations. This paper concludes that the primary benefit of an increase in FDI inflow for a...

A genetic algorithm for the ligand-protein docking problem Genet. Mol. Biol.
Magalhães,Camila S. de; Barbosa,Hélio J.C.; Dardenne,Laurent E..
We analyzed the performance of a real coded "steady-state" genetic algorithm (SSGA) using a grid-based methodology in docking five HIV-1 protease-ligand complexes having known three-dimensional structures. All ligands tested are highly flexible, having more than 10 conformational degrees of freedom. The SSGA was tested for the rigid and flexible ligand docking cases. The implemented genetic algorithm was able to dock successfully rigid and flexible ligand molecules, but with a decreasing performance when the number of ligand conformational degrees of freedom increased. The docked lowest-energy structures have root mean square deviation (RMSD) with respect to the corresponding experimental crystallographic structure ranging from 0.037 Å to 0.090 Å in the...

A glacial warm water anomaly in the subantarctic Atlantic Ocean, near the Agulhas Retroflection ArchiMer
Cortese, G; Abelmann, A; Gersonde, R.
ODP Site 1089 is optimally located in order to monitor the occurrence of maxima in Agulhas heat and salt spillage from the Indian to the Atlantic Ocean. Radiolarian-based paleotemperature transfer functions allowed to reconstruct the climatic history for the last 450 kyr at this location. A warm sea surface temperature anomaly during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 10 was recognized and traced to other oceanic records along the surface branch of the global thermolialine (THC) circulation system, and is particularly marked at locations where a strong interaction between oceanic and atmospheric overturning cells and fronts occurs. This anomaly is absent in the Vostok ice core deuterium, and in oceanic records from the Antarctic Zone. However, it is present in the...

A Guide to Successful Organic Marketing Initiatives Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto; Hamm, Ulrich; Richter, Toralf; Dahlke, Andrea.
A Guide to Successful Organic Marketing Initiatives provides practical application of the business and marketing ideas developed from the EU research project OMIaRD. Businesses based on the collaboration between organic farmers often have resources of enthusiasm and considerable skill in agricultural production but lack the means and expertise to develop successfully in the face of rapidly changing market structures and conditions. It provides useful advice on the market and policy issues to take into account, and on preparing to establish a new business with farmer participation, managing the start-up phase, and on into consolidation of a mature enterprise. It will be useful for organic farmers, enterprise managers, and practitioners in rural and regional...

A Herculean Task? Economics, Politics, and Realigning Government in the Case of U.S. Polar-Orbiting Weather Satellites AgEcon
MacAuley, Molly K..
In 1994 one of the most radical institutional restructurings in the U.S. government's provision of critical weather information took place after eight unsuccessful attempts. A presidential decision directive merged weather data collection by satellites operated by the Department of Defense for military operations and satellites operated by the Department of Commerce for civilian weather forecasting. Such radical restructuring involving government agencies with different objectives, economic constraints, and operating cultures is rare. This paper reviews the decision that led to "convergence," discusses economic arguments advanced for the merger, and finds that the problem of an incomplete contract, from the perspective of contract theory, is the...

A HIERARCHICAL BAYES APPROACH TO MODELING CHOICE DATA: A STUDY OF WETLAND RESTORATION PROGRAMS AgEcon
Eisen-Hecht, Jonathan I.; Kramer, Randall A.; Huber, Joel.
This study examines the factors the influence the values and importance that landowners place on the attributes of voluntary wetland restoration programs. Choice-based conjoint analysis, a stated preference method, was used to estimate the marginal utilities and values for restoration program attributes for North Carolina landowners. Landowner preferences were estimated at individual and aggregate levels to examine the importance of modeling heterogeneous preferences. Choice modeling performed at both aggregate and individual levels demonstrated the information gains from a disaggregated approach.

A high-copy T7 Escherichia coli expression vector for the production of recombinant proteins with a minimal N-terminal His-tagged fusion peptide BJMBR
Ramos,C.R.R.; Abreu,P.A.E.; Nascimento,A.L.T.O.; Ho,P.L..
We report here the construction of a vector derived from pET3-His and pRSET plasmids for the expression and purification of recombinant proteins in Escherichia coli based on T7 phage RNA polymerase. The resulting pAE plasmid combined the advantages of both vectors: small size (pRSET), expression of a short 6XHis tag at N-terminus (pET3-His) and a high copy number of plasmid (pRSET). The small size of the vector (2.8 kb) and the high copy number/cell (200-250 copies) facilitate the subcloning and sequencing procedures when compared to the pET system (pET3-His, 4.6 kb and 40-50 copies) and also result in high level expression of recombinant proteins (20 mg purified protein/liter of culture). In addition, the vector pAE enables the expression of a fusion...

A highly unstable Holocene climate in the subpolar North Atlantic: evidence from diatoms ArchiMer
Andersen, C; Koc, N; Moros, M.
A composite record (LO09-14) of three sediment cores from the subpolar North Atlantic (Reykjanes Ridge) was investigated in order to assess surface ocean variability during the last 11 kyr. The core site is today partly under the influence of the Irminger Current (IC), a branch of the North Atlantic Drift continuing northwestward around Iceland. However, it is also proximal to the Sub-Arctic Front (SAF) that may cause extra dynamic hydrographic conditions. We used statistical methods applied to the fossil assemblages of diatoms to reconstruct quantitative sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Our investigations give evidence for different regional signatures of Holocene surface oceanographic changes in the North Atlantic. Core LO09-14 reveal relatively low and...
